Motherhood - it's always your fault & Why Women shouldn't be in Politics

This starts off with Sarah Palin. I really don't know how I feel about her. I don't know if she's qualified. (But then I don't know if Biden is qualified either.) I don't know whether I'd vote for her if I was an American. I don't know whether she contributed in any way through bad parenting to her daughter's pregnancy or whether she did everything she could to instill values in her and her daughter decided of her own free will to go another way. I've known both kind of parents. As a Canadian, who ever the U.S. V.P. will be affects my life so minorly that I don't plan to spent much time figuring it out either.

What I do know is that I am sick of critics (both professional and person on the street) saying that this is a bad time for her to be seeking office and that she is selfish. She has a disabled child - she should not be in politics, but should be home with him. Her daughter is pregnant - she needs her mother and should not be in politics. She has 2 other school aged children - she should be home with them and not in politics. I've even heard people say that because she has a son going to Iraq that she should be home. I can't figure that one out. What is she suppose to do, sit by the phone all day? I find this annoying because I know that if Obama, McCain, Biden, Harper, or Dion had the exact same family situation (5 kids, one disabled, one pregnant, one in the army) that no one would say that this would be a bad time for them to go into politics and that they were selfish to put political ambition before their family. But Sarah is selfish for wanting to be in politics just like the men. She is also selfish because she is exposing her pregnant daughter to national ridicule. The fact that she was already a governor and that her daughter would be exposed to state level ridicule is presumably okay.

If you are a mother who wants a career, you are selfish for wanting one and sometimes having to put it before your kids. Of course, if you don't want a career and want to stay home with your kids, you are wasting your life and setting a bad example for your daughters that they shouldn't aspire to be anything else in life but "just a mother."

If you are a woman who chooses not to have children, you are selfish. You are vain and not willing to sacrifice your body, career, or lifestyle to foster a human life. You are not fulfilling your destiny as a woman and some day you will live to regret it.

If are a woman with only one child, you are selfish for raising your child as a lonely, only child. Any wrong decision your child ever makes will be your fault for your selfishness.

If you are a woman with 3, 4, 5, (or sometimes even 2) children you are selfish for bringing more humans into an overpopulated planet. It is your fault that we have pollution, global warming, and a hole in the ozone layer. And you are setting a bad example that a woman's primary purpose in life is to bear children.

If you are an unmarried female politician, you are a dried up, ball-busting, shrew who is probably too bitchy to find a man. You should not be in politics because you are such a bitch.

If you are a married female politician who is childless or an empty nester then you are not helping real women. You can't understand juggling family and career life. Your choices just reinforce the exclusion of women with children from politics. You are living the life of a male politician and therefore have nothing relevant to contribute to women.

If you are a female politician who is a mother, you are selfish. You should be at home with your children. This is not the time for you to be in politics.

The conclusion is that women are inherently selfish and always unsuitable for public office.

She got a makeover. I can see the need for modernizing, but she also lost about 40 pounds. Check out those arms. I (tongue in cheek) asked my husband, "Meth or coke?" He said it looked more like good old fashioned sticking your finger down your throat after each meal. Well she's got to compete with those vapid, Paris-Hilton-eque Bratz.

From time to time, we get invited to baby showers for couples who already have at least one child. Or we get invited to wedding showers for second or third time brides and grooms. How do you feel about this?

BTW - Don't confuse this with the actual wedding present or baby present. This is about the separate shower.

To clarify, a Christmas party is a party (be it at your place of employment, your spouse's place of employment, a group your part of, or a friend's house (or your house)) that would not be thrown but for the fact that Christmas is coming. Don't count New Year's Eve or the birthday party of anyone born in December. Don't count Christmas dinner with your family.

If you host or get invited to parties that are centred around other religious holidays (like a Hanukkah party or even a secular "winter-themed" party) count those.

I'm curious to know what December is like for the average person.

Inspired by seraphimsigrist and his comments on the series ending of the Sopranos.

What are the top 5 TV series finales? What are your thoughts?

I have 3 ideas for the top 5:

1) Seinfeld - the way they brought back all of the best characters to testify - brilliant. Plus the characters were so amoral and unlikeable over the series that having them spend a year in jail was kind of fitting. It wouldn't have worked for any other series, but it was one series ending that actually lived up to its hype.

2) The X-files - again, the bringing back all of the former characters, as ghosts was cool and you felt like you were actually getting some closure on having watched it for almost a decade.

3) Six Feet Under - the last 6 minutes are so brilliant that about 20 people have posted just that portion to You-Tube. Highly fitting with the rest of the series. And the song was hauntingly beautiful too.
